Dominic Matteo
Dominic Matteo was born in 1974 in Dumfries. His was born to English parents and Italian grandparents. He is a former footballer who represented Scotland in the national football team. A talented player, he spent most of his career playing as a defender for Liverpool and Leeds United, but also spent time at Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.
Club Football
As a youngster Dominic was a talented footballer who demonstrated a vast deal of skill from an early age. He was spotted by scouts during his time playing for Birkdale United and later joined the Liverpool School of Excellence where one of his team mates was Robbie Fowler! It was the Merseyside giants that were going to be his first club as a professional.
He signed for Liverpool Football Club in 1992, and in 1993 he made his debut in a game against Manchester City. On this occasion he played left of midfield, but over the next couple of seasons he played in a variety of positions including centre back and left back. The Liverpool personnel were trying to ascertain which spot would fit him best. He scored two goals for Liverpool – one of these being against Huddersfield in the FA Cup. In 1995 he spent a brief spell on loan to Sunderland. He enjoyed his time with the Reds and spent an impressive eight years at Anfield.
In 2000 he was transferred to Leeds United where he was considered to be one of their finest players. He is fondly remembered by Leeds followers for the goal that he scored against AC Milan in the first group stage during the 2000/2001 Champions League campaign! This goal ensured that they progressed to the next round! In 2002 he became team captain following the departure of Rio Ferdinand.
In 2004 Dominic joined Blackburn Rovers where he featured in more than thirty Premier League matches. He stayed at the club for three years. Following this he signed a short term agreement with Stoke City. He finally retired from football in 2009.
International Football Career
Dominic gained six caps for Scotland making his debut in 2000 against Australia. He was able to play for Scotland as it was the country of his birth. He could have played for England due to his parents being English and curiously he could also have chosen to play for Italy due to the fact that he has Italian grandparents.
Post Football
Dominic retired in 2009 and is studying for his UEFA coaching qualifications. He also writes a feature for the Yorkshire Evening Post and is involved with is former club Leeds United where he is regarded as a hero!
